I know what you’re thinking…
Does Megan have a new show? And the answer is…not exactly. However, the show does have many new elements—a new title, a newly edited and super tight script, and more of my own life experience to bring to this rich and hilarious story!
When the show first premiered on November 11, 2018, under the direction of Wendy Hammers and with the title Lemur Mom, I had one goal: perform it as many times as possible. That first night, we had a sold-out house and I left the stage knowing this story deeply resonated with the audience.
But doing small theater in LA isn’t easy. So, I got creative. I partnered with the CSULB Theatre Department, and two parent support groups—the Long Beach Hero Squad and We Are Brave Together —to bring the show to more audiences. Each performance became a night of laughter, connection, and purpose.
In 2019, I teamed up with Long Beach producer/director Bethany Price. We had sold-out runs in Long Beach, Santa Monica, and Tucson.
Momentum was building for a big summer 2020 season... and then, well, you know what happened next.
Zoom school, Trader Joe’s grocery lines, drive-by birthday parties. The show went dark for three years.
Not the Right Mom sat quietly, waiting. But deep down, I knew we weren’t done.
One thing that kept me going during this time was that every few months, at the grocery store or a doctor’s appointment, or once while trick or treating with my kids—someone who had seen the show locally would recognize me and say, “You’re the Lemur Mom!” and tell me what the show meant to them and how they couldn’t wait to bring their mother or their cousin or their friend because they just “NEED to see it!”
By 2022, my team and I reworked the script, refreshed the visuals, and added original music by Jessica Hayes and Joseph Ott. The show found a second wind with sold-out runs, a Best of Fest award at the Whitefire Theatre and was selected to be part of the Amplify series at the Curtis Theatre in Brea.
While this second round of shows was definitely successful, my team and I found that we were not able to take the show to the next level. (It’s very hard to put butts in seats, especially after a global pandemic!) We decided that the last performance would be at the Curtis in April 2024.
But, to use a much beloved latin phrase familiar to us theater majors (whoever said theater degrees aren’t useful?), we were granted a deus ex machina! (for you non-theater majors it means: an unexpected power or event saving a seemingly hopeless situation—think the Nazis getting their faces melted off at the end of Raiders)
Chris Wolf, artistic director of the Torrance Cultural Arts Center, and his wife, Robin, were in the audience that day and, as Chris puts it, “My wife LOVED the show and she doesn’t like anything!” (Thanks, Robin!) Chris then suggested a rebranding and became my mentor through the world of performing arts center conferences —which led to me taking this mom adventure on the road!
Not the Right Mom is growing beyond anything I could have imagined and I can’t wait to share it with more of you!
If motherhood has taught me anything, it’s that there’s no such thing as getting it “right.” There’s only showing up again and again with your whole heart, self-compassion, and snacks.
✨ Come join me for a night of laughter, connection, and truth.
